Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country

There’s more to California’s wine country than Napa and Sonoma. Travelscope moves south and “Sideways” to Santa Barbara’s Santa Ynez Wine country — the location of the Academy Award nominated movie “Sideways” — for a full menu of romantic activities that include more than wine tasting.

Most people know of the famous Northern California wine regions, but there are roughly eight wine regions in California and one that has recently been in the news is the Santa Ynez Valley Wine Region — the setting for the academy award nominated film Sideways.

The Santa Ynez Valley Wine Region is just 125 miles north of Los Angeles and 35 miles from Santa Barbara. Although in the movie Miles and Jack only visit five wineries there are more than 40 in the area. From horseback riding to the historic Cold Spring Tavern, then on to the colorful western towns of the valley, Joseph takes viewers to local museums and attractions such as the Santa Ynez Heritage Museum with its collection of antique stagecoaches. We also join Joseph as he samples Danish ableskivers in Solvang — “a little bit of Denmark in America” — and, of course, some excellent wine.

The Islands of Malaysia

The Islands of Malaysia

Joseph continues his “Colors of Malaysia” adventure through multi-cultural, multi-religious Malaysia when we travel to the islands of Penang and Langkawi. Malaysia is a dynamic multi-racial, multi-cultural country that offers a wide range of activities, experiences and natural adventures.

From Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur Joseph travels to the island of Pulau Penang. The island is 171 square miles and jammed packed with things to see and do Although Georgetown is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia and grand colonial structures abound, the historic center is more Chinese than British. Visitors can use the Tourist Office’s Heritage Trail guides to navigate on foot, but Joseph explores the winding, narrow streets is by trishaw.

From Penang it’s a quick hour flight to Pulau Langkawi, one of 104 islands at the northern end of Malaysia on the border with Thailand. Langkawi means Great Eagle and refers to the island being the home of Garuda, a mythical bird. It’s just one of many legends that thrive in Langkawi. With water, water everywhere the best thing to do in Langkawi is to get on or in it. Joseph does both on the Island Hopping Tour that was the highlight of our stay in Langkawi.

Desert Birds Bats and Wildflowers California and Yuma AZ

Desert Birds Bats and Wildflowers California and Yuma AZ

Travelscope discovers the desert’s subtle attractions when Joseph travels from California Wildflowers to Yuma, Arizona’s Birding and Nature Festival. Each year the California desert is awash in color as the region’s flora springs to live after much needed spring rains. Joseph visits Joshua Tree National Park and then heads north to Lancaster, California for the annual California Poppy extravaganza.

Yuma, Arizona is more than the Southern gateway to California. According to Farmer’s Almanac, it has the best weather in the country, it’s the site of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, and it’s the country’s highest producer of winter vegetables — and the habitat for more than 380 species of birds.

Joseph heads to Yuma for its annual tribute to our fine feathered friends during the Birding and Nature festival - five days of exhibitions, seminars, events and field trips celebrating Yuma’s natural side. In Yuma, the Colorado River brings life to the desert attracting hundreds of species of birds, as well as birdwatchers.
